The ironic thing is that no one actually disagreed with me on the science. Most of the advocates of smokeless tobacco acknowledged that there is a small, but real, causal relationship between traditional smokeless tobacco use and oral cancer (this relationship does not appear to hold for snus). However, simply because I made the statement that this causal link exists, I was blasted. Apparently, the simple statement that smokeless tobacco causes oral cancer is too much for many harm reduction advocates to tolerate.

This story demonstrates how low the integrity of research in the tobacco control movement has sunk. In today's tobacco control movement, we can draw conclusions before even conducting research because we are apparently capable of predicting the results of our experiments before they are carried out.

What the story demonstrates is that Dr. Glantz has a pre-determined set of conclusions about electronic cigarettes and the tobacco companies' role in inappropriately marketing these products to addict a new generation of kids. When presented with information, he jumps to an immediate interpretation and conclusion that supports his pre-determined schema. Instead of exercising critical judgment and objective evaluation of the evidence, he immediately twists the facts to support his pre-existing position. Dr. Glantz is just one example of a phenomenon that characterizes a number of researchers and tobacco control groups that are vehement opponents of electronic cigarettes for ideological, rather than valid scientific reasons.
