"Do not listen to what the CDC and the FDA are telling you. There is no question that by quitting smoking, you have greatly improved your health. There is no question that vaping is much safer than smoking. Do not allow yourself to be deceived by the propaganda. Do not return to cigarette smoking in fear that somehow there are hidden risks in vaping that could render them just as dangerous as cigarettes."

Monday's CNN Opinion page featured an on electronic cigarettes from Harold Wimmer, the president and CEO of the American Lung Association. In the piece, Wimmer argues that Big Tobacco companies are using electronic cigarettes to create "new nicotine addicts" and that they are enticing youth with flavors such as bubble gum and cotton candy.

In fact, the subjects had no idea that they were part of an experiment involving artificial manipulation of their news feed for the purposes of potential inducing happiness or sadness as part of a research study. This potential use of their Facebook account is simply not mentioned in the Data Use Policy. The policy states that the information provided by users may be used for research purposes. It also states that the information may be shared with outside vendors to conduct research. However, nowhere does the policy state that users agree to intentional manipulation by Facebook staff for research purposes.

If the goal here were to simply protect children and infants from accidentally ingesting nicotine, then Senator Hannon could simply have introduced legislation to require childproof packaging and warning labels on these products. Instead, it appears that the goal is actually to protect the sale of cigarettes in New York by eliminating competition from a rapidly proliferating smoking cessation product that is projected to give tobacco cigarettes a run for their money.
