Recently, Stan Glantz and colleagues called for a on electronic cigarette flavorings. Other anti-smoking groups have also urged the FDA to implement a ban on the use of flavors in electronic cigarettes. I have already why such an intervention makes no sense because it essentially represents a ban on electronic cigarettes, prevents kanger differentiation, and greatly decreases the appeal of these products, thus forever protecting the market share of tobacco cigarettes. Today, I explain why the flavors in electronic cigarettes probably play a role in deterring youth smoking. Thus, I provide another argument for why the FDA should not ban electronic cigarette flavors.

This story illustrates how misguided anti-smoking efforts are at the present time. We are placing a huge emphasis on trying to protect kids from e-cigarettes, but losing our focus on preventing kids from becoming addicted to smoking, a behavior that will eventually kill half of those who become regular users.

Instead of being a time to celebrate our continued progress in fighting Big Tobacco, Dr. Blum suggests that both the government and the national tobacco control organizations have largely abandoned the fight against the tobacco industry and smoking and instead, have dedicated themselves to funding or seeking funding for research that makes no further contribution to the protection of the public's health.
