This study, although limited to only three brands of electronic cigarettes, provides reassuring evidence that there do not, at present, appear to be major concerns about substantial health hazards associated with secondhand exposure to electronic cigarettes.

For example, one of the major problems in some of the previous survey studies of electronic cigarettes (the ones cited by Stan Glantz, for example) is that they fail to control for a major confounder: the level of a smoker's addiction to smoking and motivation to quit. Some of the studies that Glantz has cited to show that e-cigarettes are ineffective for smoking cessation compare users of e-cigarettes and non-users of e-cigarettes. In two of these studies, those who did not use e-cigarettes had higher quit rates.

In other words, Glantz has hidden this information from the reader in the review article, even though he felt it was important enough to mention in the other article. In my opinion, this is knowing dishonesty. It is hiding critical information from the reader that would affect the reader's assessment of the validity of the study's conclusions. Moreover, the review article proceeds to do precisely what the other article argues cannot and should not be done with these studies (i.e., draw conclusions about the efficacy of e-cigarettes as smoking cessation aids).

Adding to the long list of tobacco control practitioners who have publicly declared that smoking may be no more harmful than vaping - which involves no tobacco and no combustion - a South Carolina respiratory therapist is telling patients that they should not quit smoking using electronic cigarettes because these devices may be more dangerous than tobacco cigarettes, which kills more than 400,000 Americans each year.

The AHA, while recognizing the effectiveness of e-cigarettes for cessation, does not recommend e-cigarettes as a quitting method for someone who is trying to kick the habit for the first time. However, for a person who has tried to quit and failed before, e-cigarettes can be a highly effective cessation method. The AHA policy cites a just this August in which, “A large cross-sectional study showed that smokers who wanted to quit without professional help were significantly more likely to report abstinence using e-cigarettes than with traditional cessation aids or going ‘cold turkey.’”

If the American Lung Association were sincere in its alleged belief that no nicotine-containing products should have flavors that attract kids, then the first and most important action it would take is to demand an immediate ban on the use of menthol flavoring in cigarettes. Short of that, all of this claptrap about eliminating flavors that attract kids and requiring companies to alter their products to help reduce tobacco's lethal toll is a bunch of crap.
