Ironically, banning the flavors in electronic cigarettes could have the perverse effect of decreasing e-cigarette use but increasing use of real tobacco cigarettes. Hopefully, the FDA will examine this issue closely before taking the advice of anti-smoking groups and advocates, who are already calling for a ban on e-cigarette flavorings.

Is this really the way we want our federal health agencies to treat cigarettes? As a product that is of such little concern that it may be no more harmful than the combination of nicotine and propylene glycol in an electronic cigarette?

Senator Dick Durbin stated that: "the use of e-cigarettes among our nation's kids is ... closely linked to the deadly use of cigarettes."

Of course, the FDA is not going to take either of these actions. Because it knows where its bread is buttered. In contrast, however, the very same agency is prepared to pull thousands of electronic cigarettes from the market even though there really is no reliable evidence of any harms being caused by these products (with the exception of exploding batteries, which the agency should immediately address via a manufacturing standard requirement).
