However, from a public health perspective, the relevant question is not what results one would obtain if smokers were forced to use a particular strategy, but what results are obtained when smokers make the choice to use a particular strategy. This is why Stan Glantz's approach is inappropriate.

In other words, there appears to be strong evidence that in the UK, electronic cigarette use is not serving as a gateway by which nonsmokers are becoming addicted to nicotine and then progressing to real cigarette smoking.

Why would we want to suppress the provision of this information to the public? And what justification is there for a government-mandated suppression of the truth?

Tobacco control advocates have often criticized scientists who were supported by the tobacco industry for failing to disclose their funding or other conflicts of interest, such as being paid to author commentaries critical of tobacco control policies. And rightly so. However, if we now engage in the very same tactics, then we become hypocrites, and our credibility in criticizing tobacco industry "hacks" is shot. We don't have any credibility in attacking "tobacco hacks" if we are "Big Pharma hacks."

Is this really the kind of pure scientific expertise - unclouded by any ideological or political concerns - that we want to be making the critical decisions about how to regulate tobacco products which are killing hundreds of thousands of Americans each year?
