As we all know, electronic cigarettes or e-cigs are one of, if not the fast-growing segments of the nicotine products market. This summer, lawmakers in North Carolina will be debating two E-cigarette related proposals in their state house, and although “technically” there are two debates, both of these debates have relatively the same outcome; to raise much-needed state tax revenue.

Surprised that Jacob would have been paid by electronic cigarette companies to make these remarks or that his statement was orchestrated by Big Vapor, I was gratified to learn from Jacob himself that neither of these accusations from Stan are true. By this definition, it would be illegal to sell not only the e-liquids used in modular electronic cigarettes, but also the refill cartridges used in rechargeable electronic cigarettes. Thus, this legislation would remove from the market a huge chunk of the electronic cigarettes that are currently sold in New York State. Only disposable electronic cigarettes would remain, and it is unclear if even these would be allowed to be sold, since they do contain "a liquid composed of nicotine and other chemicals" that is "used in an electronic cigarette." Thus, it is conceivable that this legislation would ban the sale of all electronic cigarettes in the state of New York.

Yesterday, I was informed by one of the contributing authors to the 2014 Surgeon General's report that each of the authors and reviewers of the report was required to complete conflict of interest disclosure forms. This makes the problem even more serious than it initially appeared. It now seems that this is not merely a matter of the CDC not knowing about, or failing to inquire about the conflicts of interest of report authors. Instead, this is now a matter of the CDC hiding, or covering up, these conflicts of interest, which are not revealed to the public anywhere in the report or on the report's web site.
