In his on the Hit & Run blog, Jacob Sullum nicely points out the way in which Dr. Frieden is completely ignoring the multitude of data showing that literally thousands of ex-smokers were able to quit smoking using electronic cigarettes. He continues to call these people nothing but "anecdotes." Sullum also points out that Dr. Frieden is " from whole cloth in an effort to portray theproduct as a grave threat to public health and a menace to 'ourchildren.'"

But what is the clinical meaning of this effect? In order to find that out, one needs to conduct studies with longer-term end points.

There is no excuse for collecting this important information, but not revealing it to the public. The only legitimate justification for this would be if there were no reported conflicts of interest. In such a case, the report could have included a statement indicating that none of the report's authors reported a conflict of interest.
