It may actually be the case that electronic cigarettes serve as an inhibitor of smoking initiation by getting a youth used to a flavorful experience, thus making it less likely - not more likely - that the youth will move on to the harsh taste of tobacco. It is difficult enough to enjoy the initial experiences with tobacco cigarettes, but it would be expected to become that much less enjoyable if one has become accustomed to a flavored nicotine product like electronic cigarettes.

A group of Congressmembers today released a report that criticizes pharmaceutical companies for targeting kids with candy-flavored nicotine replacement products. In addition to using appealing flavors, the report says, the pharmaceutical companies are attracting youth by using social media, sponsorship of youth-oriented events, and television and radio advertisements that reach substantial youth audiences. The report, entitled "“Gateway to Addiction? A Study of Nicotine Replacement Product Manufactureres and Marketing to Youth," is the first investigation of tactics used by pharmaceutical companies to market nicotine gum and nicotine lozenges to youth.

According to an in the Texas Tribune: "A Victoria hospital already embroiled in a discrimination lawsuit filed by doctors of Indian descent has instituted a highly unusual hiring policy: It bans job applicants from employment for being too overweight. The policy, instituted a little more than a year ago, requires potential employees to have a body mass index of less than 35 —which is 210 pounds for someone who is 5-foot-5, and 245 pounds for someone who is 5-foot-10. It states that an employee’s physique “should fit with a representational image or specific mental projection of the job of a healthcare professional,” including an appearance “free from distraction” for hospital patients."

Another problem with what Dr. Glantz has done is that it is fundamentally dishonest. He is essentially lying to the public about the science regarding electronic cigarettes. He knows full well - as he acknowledges in the paper - that this study provides no answer regarding whether e-cigarettes precede and lead to smoking or whether youths who are heavier and more dependent smokers are more likely to experiment with e-cigarettes. Nevertheless, he is telling the public that he has answered the question and that the answer is that e-cigarette use precedes and leads to smoking. This is tantamount to lying to the public.
