The public health charity ‘Action on Smoking and Health’ are fairly optimistic regarding the potential for vaping to be able to help smokers kick the dangerous habit and they inferred that the contents of e-cigarettes appear to be less than harmful. Although nicotine has been connected to anxiety and blood vessel disease, when this is compared to the percentage of smokers that contract cancer from tobacco, things look far more positive. A study that was conducted in 2013 did reveal that the practice of e-smoking helped to reduce the cravings for real cigarettes amongst heavy smokers and as such they managed to decrease the amount of harmful tobacco consumption. Because they strongly resemble and actually mimic the action of smoking a normal cigarette, it is believed that vaping has the potential to completely replace the desire to smoke amongst the same demographic.
Despite a small increase in polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon concentrations, there were no significant increases for any of the known or probably carcinogenic compounds.
By opposing the classification of e-cigarettes as tobacco products, the e-cigarette associations have been everything they can to avoid regulations that treat these products in the same way. The reason is simple: such regulations would give cigarettes a huge competitive advantage in the market place. Laws that categorize e-cigarettes the same way as tobacco products are essentially protective legislation for tobacco cigarettes. By fighting such a classification, e-cigarette associations are doing what they can to reject the idea of this protective legislation so that they can gain the upper hand on cigarettes and eventually, make these products obsolete.
Per rumor only, I am expecting the FDA electronic cigarette deeming regulations to be released today. It will take me some time to digest and analyze them, but as soon as I do, I will provide a summary and commentary on their implications.
While I agree with the editorial, it is quite a condemnation of the current field of tobacco control research.
