A new published online ahead of print in the journal Cancer reports that e-cigarettes are not helpful for smoking cessation among patients with cancer.

You see, there is no question that huge reductions in cigarette consumption improve respiratory symptoms. My patients who were able to cut down substantially on their smoking experienced immediate improvements in their ability to exercise and were able to enjoy life more because they could do more things without getting short of breath. Research confirms that respiratory symptoms improve when smokers are able to cut down the amount they smoke by at least 50%.

Here, they find a correlation between e-cigarette use and higher and more sustained levels of smoking. But because this is a cross-sectional study, they cannot determine which came first. In other words, what is the direction of the causal relationship? Does the e-cigarette use precede, and cause, the smoking? Or does the smoking precede, and cause, the e-cigarette use?

To highlight the absurdity of this aspect of the deeming regulations, it means that electronic cigarette companies will not be allowed to even claim that their product is free of tobacco. The law states that a tobacco product manufacturer cannot claim that "the tobacco product or its smoke does not contain or is free of a substance." In other words, an electronic cigarette company cannot claim that its electronic cigaretes do not contain, or are free of, tobacco.

If this statement was misquoted by the Times, then the CDC should have immediately corrected it. Since I do not see any correction (as of the time of the writing of this post), I have to assume that the statement is correct.
