This lack of transparency in the report is unfortunate because readers deserve to be informed about financial conflicts of interest that could potentially have influenced the report's presentation and interpretation of the scientific evidence. This is especially important because the report makes broad conclusions regarding national strategies for smoking cessation. Thus, if the report's authors have received money from pharmaceutical companies that make the very products about which the report is opining, it would be critical to disclose these conflicts. The report fails to do so.

It is so frustrating to me to wake up every day to find another anti-smoking group spreading fraudulent statements about the health effects of cigarettes. This truly undermines decades of public education about the dangers of smoking. And it helps protect the profits of cigarette companies at the expense of the protection of the public's health.

There is a part of this story that was not revealed at the hearing, and it is time to reveal it now at the Rest of the Story.

This advice is all fine and dandy for smokers who feel confident that they can quit using FDA-approved drugs. However, what about smokers who don't have the self-efficacy to quit using such drugs? What about smokers who have tried and failed with these approaches and are quite sure that it would be a waste of time to try the same dismal methods again? And what about smokers who are particularly excited about the possibility of using electronic cigarettes in a quit attempt?

The results from these two studies demonstrate that in contrast to the claims of many anti-smoking advocates, dual use of electronic cigarettes and conventional cigarettes does not necessarily have adverse public health consequences. Instead, it appears that for many smokers, dual use serves as a gateway to decreased nicotine addiction, and perhaps ultimately to smoking cessation.
