Yesterday, I was informed by one of the contributing authors to the 2014 Surgeon General's report that each of the authors and reviewers of the report was required to complete conflict of interest disclosure forms. This makes the problem even more serious than it initially appeared. It now seems that this is not merely a matter of the CDC not knowing about, or failing to inquire about the conflicts of interest of report authors. Instead, this is now a matter of the CDC hiding, or covering up, these conflicts of interest, which are not revealed to the public anywhere in the report or on the report's web site.

The problem with e-cigarette experimentation, for the prospects of cigarette smoking initiation, is that youth are getting used to sweet and flavored products. It is going to be extremely difficult to go from the sweet and flavored taste of the electronic cigarette to the harsh taste of a tobacco cigarette. That transition is not favored, at least not on a theoretical basis. Why would a youth switch from a cherry e-cigarette to a Marlboro?

Incidentally, it is just not true that the plural of anecdote is not data. In fact, a single anecdote is "data." One of the most basic study designs in epidemiology is something called a "case study." That is the "anecdote" about a single individual. The next basic design is a "case series," which is simply a number of "anecdotes."
