The misinformation in the tobacco control field is so widespread that hardly a day goes by that an anti-smoking advocate somewhere doesn't publicly declare that smoking may be no more dangerous than vaping. Yesterday, it was the Sedgwick County Health Department (Wichita, KS), which wrote in an op-ed in the Kansas City Star:

You see, the goal of the Tobacco Act was not to save lives, but to gain a political victory for the anti-smoking groups. The goal was to put a feather in the cap of the anti-smoking groups' national leaders, rather than to establish a rational, science-based policy designed to reduce cigarette smoking, make cigarettes safer, and promote the public's health.

Today, it has become apparent that ANR has no intention of retracting or clarifying its defamatory statement attacking Mistic E-Cigarettes, accusing it of being owned by Big Tobacco, and claiming that it is putting out misinformation similar to the historical fraudulent actions of the tobacco industry. I wrote my colleagues at ANR to inform them about the inaccuracy in their public accusation, but received no response. Moreover, the claim remains on ANR's website, unchanged.

At the same time that the tobacco companies and the U.S. Department of Justice reached a consensus on the location of the tobacco industry corrective statements, the Rest of the Story has reached a consensus on the text and location of a set of corrective statements it is ordering that CDC and several anti-smoking groups and advocates make, in the wake of last year's revelation that they lied about the dangers of electronic cigarettes.
