For CDC:
1. Electronic cigarette companies cannot inform consumers that these products are safer than cigarettes, and they cannot even tell the public that they are free of tobacco.
The report is also hiding the fact that many of its authors have or had financial conflicts of interest with pharmaceutical companies that manufacture the products about which the report provides a misleadingly positive review.
As tobacco control advocates commemorate the 50th anniversary of the release of the 1964 Surgeon General's report on smoking by Dr. Luther Terry, we are praising Dr. Terry for his groundbreaking and pivotal work that many view as having started the tobacco control movement. Dr. Terry served as Surgeon General of the United States Public Health Service from 1961 to 1965.
Dr. Glantz's comments on the lack of health benefit in cutting down on one's smoking come in response to one of the reported benefits of electronic cigarettes: that they help many smokers to cut down substantially on the amount they smoke. Glantz : "Dual users, who simultaneously use both products, are unlikely to see much, if any, health benefit because of the continued cigarette use, even if daily consumption drops." In other words, if you are still smoking, there are no benefits from cutting down on the amount you smoke thanks to e-cigarettes.
If the electronic cigarette companies are acting fraudulently, then I guess so am I. If you review my blog, you will find that I referred to what comes out of electronic cigarettes as a vapor until quite recently. It wasn't until several months ago that I learned that it is actually an aerosol rather than a vapor. I wasn't using a tobacco industry tactic; I was simply using the term that was most commonly used, and I was using the term that I believed was correct. I don't have any reason to believe that electronic cigarette companies were doing anything different. Moreover, it is not fraudulent for these companies to try to connote reduced harm. Electronic cigarettes are undeniably less harmful than real cigarettes.
