The Senate Finance Committee will hold a hearing on the proposed electronic cigarette tax tomorrow at 4:00 pm. Hopefully, the Committee members will vote on the side of protecting the public's health rather than protecting cigarette profits.

If electronic cigarette companies were forced to adhere to the MSA, it would bring an end to all electronic cigarette brand name sponsorships, outdoor and transit advertising, branded merchandise, free product samples (except in adult-only establishments), and targeting of youth in advertising.

For this reason, the FDA should think long and hard before jumping into a decision to ban the flavors in electronic cigarettes. It is possible that despite encouraging experimentation among some nonsmoking youth, flavored electronic cigarettes may actually have a net positive effect on the public's health by serving as an overall deterrent to youth smoking.
