In her on CDC's "Tips from Former Smokers" anti-smoking campaign, Nancy Wride of Elements Behavioral Health made an interesting observation. On its web site describing a variety of possible strategies to quit smoking, the CDC does not list electronic cigarettes. Wride therefore asked the CDC why electronic cigarettes are not included on its web site as a potential smoking cessation aid.

Before anyone swears off electronic cigarettes completely (which is not the point of this article by the way) the levels of diacetyl and acetyl propionyl present are higher than the NIOSH standards, BUT they are severely lower than that of regular cigarettes. In terms of getting obliterative bronchiolitis, it is still a lot safer to use electronic cigarettes over regular cigarettes as the diacetyl and acetyl propionyl are much lower, but just because they are lower, we cannot dismiss diacetyl being in our E-Juices immediately. If they flavors do have diacetyl, they should be avoided if possible. In fact, TFA/TPA is coming out with a new line of custard and cream flavors (known as the V2) that contain little to no diacetyl in their flavorings. I am hesitant to believe there aren’t at least traces of diacetyl present as we already know even some fruit flavors have them. But hopefully it will meet the NIOSH standards with their new line. With TFA/TPA spearheading non-diacetyl rich flavorings, it is my hope that other flavoring companies are following the same practice. Electronic cigarettes are becoming increasingly popular every day; the flavoring companies need to meet the demands of the community and avoid diacetyl in their flavorings if possible.

At one corner we have Big Tobacco, a $90 industry and the E-Cig industry is poking a very angry bear, and at the other corner is Big Pharma, the who have repeatedly been pushing for more and more regulation with E-Cigs and to claim that E-Cigs does not help with quitting and should not be advertised as such. There are doctors that still will not advice patients to use vaporizers to curb smoking sensation, but instead use Chantix instead. Chantix is still being prescribed right now and have yet to be pulled from pharmacies. In response to these suicides, all Pfizer has done is put a warning label on the box.

The most telling point is Dr. Glantz's opposition to legislation that classifies electronic cigarettes as being separate from tobacco products. The electronic cigarette associations have been lobbying local and state governments not to classify e-cigarettes as tobacco products. This makes perfect sense because they are not tobacco products. They contain no tobacco. They are orders of magnitude safer than cigarettes and should not be treated in the same category for regulatory purposes.
