Sidney et al. found that among women, lung cancer risk was for lifelong smokers of filtered cigarettes than smokers of non-filtered cigarettes: "in long-term (> 20 years) smokers, the risk of lung cancer was decreased in women who had smoked filtered cigarettes for 20 or more years relative to lifelong smokers of unfiltered cigarettes (RR = 0.36, CI = 0.18-0.75)."

In contrast to what ANR is stating, the study found no effect of e-cigarettes on lung function, as measured by spirometry. This is in contrast to tobacco smoking, which does have effects on lung function that can be measured using spirometric testing. While previous research indicates that active smoking and even secondhand smoke exposure can affect acute lung function as measured by spirometry, the study demonstrated that electronic cigarette use led to no impairment of lung function detectable via spirometric testing.

The AHA’s need to issue a policy statement on e-cigarettes comes in response to the skyrocketing use of these devices. As of early 2014, there were an estimated 466 brands and 7764 different flavors of e-cigarette products. With all of these products in the marketplace, critics are concerned with the danger of youth use, often citing that the flavors and packaging of these devices and e-liquids are making nicotine use more attractive for kids & teenagers. In 2012 data from the showed that only 2.1% of kids in grade 6-12 use e-cigarettes, however this number is up from the previous year. Seventy-six percent of youth who have tried e-cigarettes also smoke traditional cigarettes. This seems to suggest that despite many critics’ concerns, e-cigarettes aren’t necessarily the “gateway” to smoking that some people originally thought.

While there is still a lot we do not know about the exact magnitude of any long-term risks associated with electronic cigarette use, vapers should be quite reassured that after at least five years of research into the health effects of vaping, the worst that electronic cigarette opponents can say is: "Well ... they're not harmless."
