To be valid, the study needs to examine e-cigarette smokers who have not tried these products before and are trying them for the first time in an attempt to quit smoking. Otherwise, the study cannot truly claim to draw conclusions about how helpful e-cigarettes are for smoking cessation among cancer patients.

In other words, the deeming regulations place an insurmountable obstacle in the way of new and innovative products. This is disastrous because it is new products which are essential to continue to drive the market forward. It is the new products which will be safer and more effective. It is the new products that are critical to allowing electronic cigarettes to some day seriously challenge or overtake the combustible market.

The authors conclude as follows: "By substantially reducing number of cigarettes smoked per day and exposure to their hazardous toxicants, e-cigs may not only improve asthma symptoms and pulmonary function but may also confer an overall health advantage in smokers with asthma. Therefore, e-cig use in asthmatic smokers unable or unwilling to quit should be exploited as a safer alternative approach to harm-reversal (i.e., specific reversal of asthma-related outcomes) and, in general, to harm-reduction (i.e., overall reduction of smoke-related diseases)."

Now, if those 100 resistant smokers were then followed for six months, we would expect that very few of them would quit smoking because all of them had already tried e-cigarettes and failed.

It is worth noting that the conclusions which Dr. Glantz is disseminating are destructive because they undermine decades of public education about the severe hazards of smoking. If the public thinks that smoking is only as risky as vaping, then it is likely that many smokers will decide to continue smoking rather than quitting using electronic cigarettes. And many ex-smokers who have quit with electronic cigarettes may return to smoking, thinking that they might as well since they are not getting any definite health benefit from having made the switch.
