The impact of this confounding is that it will bias the results towards finding that e-cigarettes are much less effective than other approaches. In fact, this is exactly what happened and it is the reason why the evidence that Glantz and others are citing to support their contention that e-cigarettes hinder smoking cessation is invalid.

I am very familiar with the tactics of ANR because I served on the ANR Executive Board for several years. The reason I resigned from the ANR Executive Board was that they told me they were more concerned with the political impact of their statements than worrying about whether their statements might be defamatory. Thus, the potentially defamatory statements that ANR is currently making about electronic cigarette companies and groups appear to be in line with its long-standing philosophy of using unethical tactics to smear, attack, and defame what it views to be its enemies.

Ironically, banning the flavors in electronic cigarettes could have the perverse effect of decreasing e-cigarette use but increasing use of real tobacco cigarettes. Hopefully, the FDA will examine this issue closely before taking the advice of anti-smoking groups and advocates, who are already calling for a ban on e-cigarette flavorings.
