Last Wednesday, the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Technology held a hearing on the marketing of electronic cigarettes. Several senators, including Jay Rockefeller (D-WV), Barbara Boxer (D-CA), and Richard Blumenthal (D-CT) harshly attacked the two electronic cigarette company executives who testified before the committee, calling them liars who are doing harm to the public and comparing them to the Big Tobacco executives of the past.

In other words, the blatant flaw in this study is that it enrolled smokers who had already made quit attempts using e-cigarettes in the past. By definition, this resulted in a sample of smokers who were more resistant to quitting. One would expect to find lower quitting rates among this population of e-cigarette users.

The Rest of the Story

First, in contrast to what Stan Glantz is arguing, dual use does not appear to be an "adverse consequence" of e-cigarette experimentation. Instead, it appears to be a positive effect that results in a substantial reduction in cigarette consumption among smokers who would almost certainly not have quit smoking altogether in the absence of electronic cigarettes.
