The major problem with Dr. Glantz's argument is that he is considering only smoking-related mortality. The literature he cites deals with mortality only. However, there is more to life than simply its length. The quality of life is also important (although apparently not for smokers, according to Glantz). And cutting down the amount you smoke substantially improves the quality of life by reducing respiratory morbidity.

Unfortunately, ANR is so determined to attack electronic cigarette use that it has abandoned scientific integrity and is spreading misinformation to the public. While ANR has every right to advocate against the use of electronic cigarettes, it should not do so based on false and misleading information.

The report includes pictures of product images and advertisements that appear to showcase the sweet, fruit flavorings of these products.

Whether e-cigarette use precedes smoking or smoking precedes e-cigarette use is a critical question, but it is one which needs to be answered through longitudinal research. We need studies that follow the trajectory of teen tobacco/e-cigarette use over time. That is the only way to determine which comes first.
