According to an at Law360.com, the recently-released Surgeon General's report's conclusion that cigarette filters may actually increase the risk of lung cancer could lead to a new wave of class-action lawsuits against cigarette companies.

But we know this is not the case because in journal articles published by many of the report authors, they have acknowledged multiple conflicts of interest with Big Pharma.

This is quite a twist, since usually Congress oversees the enforcement of laws. Here, Representatives Waxman, Harkin, and Welch are requesting that their state Attorneys General violate the law by illegally enforcing an invalid contract.

This argument might have some plausibility if electronic cigarettes were "starter cigarettes." In other words, if electronic cigarettes were much milder versions of tobacco cigarettes, with milder tobacco flavor, then it might be expected that youth could advance from an electronic cigarette to a real one. Electronic cigarettes with tobacco or menthol flavoring, for example, might be expected to get kids used to the taste of a tobacco cigarette and thus to promote cigarette smoking initiation.

Prior to this study, the most significant health concern regarding passive vaping was the possibility of exposure to carcinogenic and toxic aldehydes and pyrolysis products including formaldehyde, acrolein, and acetone. However, this study found no increase in concentrations of any of these pollutants under realistic (real-life) conditions.
