Along with the Surgeon General's who served before him, Dr. Terry shares in the culpability for the 128 deaths and 19 cases of congenital syphilis that were caused by the government's irresponsibility and racism. While it is not pretty, these are the facts and we cannot simply ignore this atrocity and pretend that it is not part of Dr. Terry's legacy.

In the piece, she writes: "E-cigarettes are marketed in a variety of flavors, including cherry crush, peach schnapps, java jolt and magnificent menthol; such flavoring agents increase the appeal of the product to youth. Not surprisingly, the use of e-cigarettes is rapidly increasing among children. This is why this "next generation" product is of concern to pediatricians like myself; it offers an excellent way to addict the next generation of children to nicotine. ... We are at a critical juncture now — a moment when we can prevent children from being duped by advertising into using e-cigarettes. We should take steps to ban the advertising of e-cigarettes and prohibit their use indoors to ensure that the next generation does not suffer the consequences."

In a separate published in the same issue of Circulation, these same authors write: "As of March 2014, 5 population-based studies had examined the relationship between e-cigarette use and quitting smoking. Because these studies did not measure whether people were using e-cigarettes as a smoking cessation aid or other reasons for use such as to circumvent smoke-free laws, they did not directly test the efficacy of e-cigarettes as smoking cessation aids." [emphasis is mine]

The rest of the story, then, is that health advocates in Michigan are so blinded by ideology (that anything that looks like a cigarette is evil) that they are on the exact opposite side of the issue as they should be. First, they are opposing the prohibition of the sale of e-cigarettes to minors. Second, they are in favor of protecting the sale of tobacco cigarettes by removing all competitive advantage that e-cigarettes hold in the marketplace.

The rest of the story is that the anti-smoking groups are whining loudly because they need to: they need to cover up their own indiscretion -- negotiating and supporting a bill with no teeth, while misleading the public about the strength of the bill and its effects. In other words, unless the anti-smoking groups shift the blame over to the tobacco companies, then the fact that these groups lied to the American people is going to become clear.
