In a press release issued Monday by 13 members of Congress, a group of politicians claimed that there is "more" evidence that electronic cigarettes are a gateway to smoking.

Banning the sale of flavored electronic cigarettes would be tantamount to a ban on virtually all electronic cigarettes. In reality, virtually every electronic cigarette product is flavored. Even the "tobacco" type of electronic cigarette is actually a flavored product, since flavorings are generally used to create that "tobacco" taste. Otherwise, the only ingredients in electronic cigarettes are nicotine, propylene glycol, and glycerin.

Today, I reveal that CDC has again lied to the public, which suggests that its dishonesty is not just an inconsequential slip, but a pattern of dishonest behavior intended to demonize electronic cigarettes.

Senator Boxer also has no business excoriating the e-cigarette executives as she, too, sold out to Big Tobacco by supporting the legislation which exempted menthol from the cigarette flavoring ban. And she, too, has failed to sponsor legislation - now or any time in the past four years - that would correct the problem now by banning menthol cigarettes.

Another inexcusable conflict of interest is the fact that Mitch Zeller, the director of the FDA's Center for Tobacco Products and therefore the chief author of the proposed electronic cigarette regulations, came to the FDA directly from a consulting job with GlaxoSmithKline and therefore has a severe conflict of interest regarding the electronic cigarette issue.
