Stan writes: "Kelvin Choi and Jean Forester just published a of young adults that followed young adults in Minnesota for one year and examined how attitudes about e-cigarettes affected behavior. They report that one year after entering the study 7.4% of the young adults reported ever using e-cigarettes (21.6% among baseline current smokers, 11.9% among baseline former smokers, and 2.9% among baseline nonsmokers). Put another way, 11.9% of people who had quit smoking before the study started were using e-cigarettes at the end as were 2.9% of people who had never smoked. For these people, e-cigarettes were a pathway to renewed or new nicotine addiction."

"The best advice for smokers is to stop using any form of tobacco and/or nicotine as soon as possible. Smokers who want to quit can try stopping on their own with or without other guidance. They can also try one or more of the options that can help them quit, such as a telephone quitline; one or a combination of the seven FDA-approved cessation medications (five nicotine replacements [gum, patch, inhaler, lozenges, and nasal spray] and two prescription medications [bupropion and varenicline]); and/or counseling from their physician, nurse, pharmacist, or other qualified health care professional."

If the FDA goes ahead with its proposal to subject electronic cigarettes to section 911 of the Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act, e-cigarettes will become the first such product.

Presumably, these five studies examined the rate of quitting among smokers who used electronic cigarettes in an attempt to quit smoking.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is telling the public that electronic cigarettes are a gateway to youth smoking. The CDC has alarmed the public about a concerning doubling of the use of electronic cigarettes by teenagers from 2011 to 2012. Although I pointed out that most of this use occurred among smokers, the CDC nevertheless concluded that electronic cigarettes are leading to increased smoking rates among youth.
