In order to draw the conclusion that Dr. Glantz drew in his comment, one would have to completely ignore this study. Obviously, Dr. Glantz has done exactly that. He has based his comment on one narrow study and ignored the rest of the literature.

Nevertheless, the anti-smoking groups insist that the tobacco industry funding should have been disclosed. For one, they argue that section 5 of the form insists that authors disclose any other conflicts of interest, even if they occurred prior to the past three years. Second, they argue that the history of funding by tobacco companies is well within the spirit of the disclosure requirement and that the authors have an obligation to let readers know that in the past, they have had financial relationships with Big Tobacco.

The Rest of the Story

Falk et al., in a of the risk for laryngeal cancer, found that: "Higher risks were associated with smoking nonfiltered than filtered cigarettes." For those who smoked filtered cigarettes, the OR was 5.9 (95% CI = 2.4-14.4); for those who smoked non-filtered cigarettes, the OR was 9.0 (95% CI = 3.2-25.1).

Presumably, these five studies examined the rate of quitting among smokers who used electronic cigarettes in an attempt to quit smoking.
