Is there any other area of science where the researchers have to be reminded to be honest and rigorous?

Despite its massive 978-page length, the new Surgeon General's - released last Friday - fails to include any mention of the many population-based studies which have shown that unaided smoking cessation is superior to the use of nicotine replacement therapy (NRT).

The Marini study demonstrates that electronic cigarettes do lead to a reduction in exhaled nitric oxide, which suggests that they have a mild respiratory irritant effect and induce some inflammation in the airways. This is a finding which has been reported previously in a number of studies. It is not surprising because propylene glycol is known to be a mild respiratory irritant.

I wanted to know what advanced technology they were talking about, so I ordered their basic starter kit to see if their claims had any merit.

Of course, this is the same thing as stating that cigarette smoking may be no worse than vaping in terms of its effects on pulmonary function.

That the CDC has apparently drawn pre-determined conclusions about these questions is both inappropriate and unfortunate. And it is not only unscientific but it precludes the agency from making evidence-based decisions or recommendations.

What would be an example of such a severe problem that it warrants reporting to the FDA? to the medical branch chief in the Office of Science at FDA's Center for Tobacco Products, such a severe problem would be something like if a cigarette "just smells or tastes wrong."
