A group of Congressmembers today released a report that criticizes pharmaceutical companies for targeting kids with candy-flavored nicotine replacement products. In addition to using appealing flavors, the report says, the pharmaceutical companies are attracting youth by using social media, sponsorship of youth-oriented events, and television and radio advertisements that reach substantial youth audiences. The report, entitled "“Gateway to Addiction? A Study of Nicotine Replacement Product Manufactureres and Marketing to Youth," is the first investigation of tactics used by pharmaceutical companies to market nicotine gum and nicotine lozenges to youth.

I believe that this story reveals the venom that many e-cigarette opponents have for the act of smoking and anything that looks like it. And that ideological venom is what is keeping them from forming opinions based on the actual scientific evidence. Professor Ashton's apparent hatred for vapers can only be rooted in an ideology that despises the physical act of smoking, regardless of whether what is being "smoked" contains tobacco or not or whether the behavior is killing the person or perhaps saving his life. In other words, this is a great example to demonstrate the way in which ideology, not science or public health, guides the opinions and statements of many electronic cigarette opponents.

The Rest of the Story

"The government has an obligation to carefully scrutinize any new consumer product that is presented as an alternative to smoking. But government agencies and public health officials have no business discouraging or disparaging e-cigarettes in the absence of any data that they are causing harm. This is especially the case when these products have so much potential to curb cigarette smoking, the public health scourge that still claims half a million lives a year."

Recently, Stan Glantz and colleagues called for a on electronic cigarette flavorings. Other anti-smoking groups have also urged the FDA to implement a ban on the use of flavors in electronic cigarettes. I have already why such an intervention makes no sense because it essentially represents a ban on electronic cigarettes, prevents brand differentiation, and greatly decreases the appeal of these products, thus forever protecting the market share of tobacco cigarettes. Today, I explain why the flavors in electronic cigarettes probably play a role in deterring youth smoking. Thus, I provide another argument for why the FDA should not ban electronic cigarette flavors.
