But sadly, I have no doubt about how to answer the question I posed in the title for this post. I am sure that Stan will continue to defend his false accusations and allow them to stand, rather than to retract these defamatory remarks and apologize to Jacob and others whose reputations he defiled. Sadly, these tactics are acceptable in the tobacco control movement, as long as they are directed at tobacco companies (and now, electornic cigarette companies).

Second, disclosure of conflicts of interest is essential to achieve the public health ethical principle of transparency. Readers have the right to know if there are any relevant conflicts that could be perceived as influencing the objectivity of scientific reports.

There is no justification for drawing this sweeping conclusion based solely on studies of mouse brains, without a shred of clinical or epidemiologic evidence that suggests e-cigarettes serve as a gateway to smoking or illicit drug addiction. And I think it is inappropriate to engage in this kind of scaremongering.

To make matters worse, the deeming regulations would prohibit electronic cigarette companies from informing their consumers that vaping is less hazardous than smoking. In fact, e-cigarette companies would not even be allowed to inform consumers that electronic cigarettes are free of tobacco, or that they have much lower levels of a number of carcinogens and are free of thousands of harmful chemicals that are present in tobacco smoke.
