I can only hope that science will be restored to its rightful place in tobacco control and public health. But right now, I am not at all optimistic.

The rest of the story is that dual use is not necessarily a bad thing. In fact, it may for some be a gateway to smoking cessation.

Today, I report that the open door has been entered: Citizens Medical Center in Victoria, Texas has adopted a policy by which it will not hire anyone who is obese. Obesity is defined in the policy as a body mass index (BMI) greater than 35.

They write: "What’s even more troubling is that these products serve as a gateway to traditional tobacco products. A recent JAMA Pediatrics study found that middle and high-school students who used e-cigarettes were more likely to smoke traditional cigarettes and less likely to quit smoking." In support of this statement, they cite the Glantz and Dutra cross-sectional study of e-cigarette use and smoking among youth.
