Per rumor only, I am expecting the FDA electronic cigarette deeming regulations to be released today. It will take me some time to digest and analyze them, but as soon as I do, I will provide a summary and commentary on their implications.
GASP may want a 100% smoke-free environment in public places, but it said nothing in the entire news interview about the real public health problem in New Jersey: secondhand smoke exposure in the state's casinos. Moreover, while GASP is promoting legislation to get rid of every last wisp of smoke on entire college campuses and to ban electronic cigarette use in remote areas of a beach, the legislation that the group is supporting allows smoking to continue unabated in the state's casinos, where hundreds of workers are suffering from real diseases brought on by secondhand smoke exposure.
The Rest of the Story
It the policy were based on health principles, then it certainly would not exempt current employees. Clearly, the hospital doesn't care that much about the health principle, since it will continue to employ smokers with no questions asked.
If this was advice given by Glantz to a smoker he was treating, it would represent malpractice. Instead, it is what I consider to be public health malpractice.

The changes mean that from next month e-cigarettes can be shown, including in use, in ads across UK media, on the condition that the ads comply with the strict new rules.
