In my blog , I argued that the cigarette companies cannot possibly be found in violation of the law for using alternative names for their products when the law specifically allowed those products to remain on the market.

Earlier this week, I that the 2014 Surgeon General's fails to disclose the conflicts of interest of its authors, many of whom have received money from pharmaceutical companies which manufacture the very products about which the report opines. I also how this is particularly problematic, since the report itself complains about how historically, tobacco-funded scientists failed to disclose their conflicts of interest. I concluded that the 2014 Surgeon General's report is violating the very ethical principles that it attacks the tobacco company for violating in the past, and I note that while there has been substantial progress in the past 50 years in the area of disclosure of conflicts of interest, somehow that progress has evaded the producers of the Surgeon General's report itself.

The AHA, while recognizing the effectiveness of e-cigarettes for cessation, does not recommend e-cigarettes as a quitting method for someone who is trying to kick the habit for the first time. However, for a person who has tried to quit and failed before, e-cigarettes can be a highly effective cessation method. The AHA policy cites a just this August in which, “A large cross-sectional study showed that smokers who wanted to quit without professional help were significantly more likely to report abstinence using e-cigarettes than with traditional cessation aids or going ‘cold turkey.’”

Based on this single study, Dr. Glantz concludes: "the FDA must be extremely careful about assuming that e-cigarettes uniformly pose less risk than conventional cigarettes."
