By publicly refuting the black box warning, Pfizer is literally spitting in the face of the FDA. This is not appropriate. The company should either be penalized and forced to discontinue its campaign of refutation of the black box warning findings, or the drug should be pulled from the market due to a finding that the company has violated the terms of the drug's approval.

The only bad news coming out of the actual data is that the efforts of anti-smoking groups and advocates appear to be working: they are being successful in discouraging smokers from trying to quit smoking using electronic cigarettes. Ironically, the results of public health efforts have been to impede smoking cessation, lower the overall motivation of smokers to quit, and decreasing the number of quit attempts among current smokers.

The Rest of the Story

However, the "health" advocates want e-cigarettes to be defined as tobacco products. Even though they are not tobacco products and do not contain any tobacco.

The truth is that this paper provides no evidence whatsoever that e-cigarette use is a gateway to smoking. Instead, it is entirely possible - and quite likely - that youths who use e-cigarettes are more likely to be heavier and more resistant smokers.
