As vaping becomes increasingly more popular, I am seeing more and more vendors throw around the word “premium” on their line of flavors. How their line of E-Juices only using premium flavoring, and it is the best on the market. I’ve also seen E-Juice manufacturers charge a whopping $1/ml for a bottle of E-juice; that’s $30 for 30ml worth of E-Juice. But what exactly are you paying for What justifies the price of such high price E-Juice Why pay $30 for 30ml when you can buy a 30ml bottle for $10 elsewhere Is it just a fad a gimmick or is there really a noticeable difference

Last November, I reported that CDC was by telling us that an agency survey had found that electronic cigarettes are a gateway to smoking. Specifically, I noted that CDC director Dr. Thomas Frieden : "What we are doing first is tracking, and we are seeing some very concerning trends. Use of e-cigarettes in youth doubled just in the past year, and many kids are starting out with e-cigarettes and then going on to smoke conventional cigarettes." However, the CDC was a cross-sectional one and it didn't track e-cigarette users over time to see whether they went on to smoke conventional cigarettes. Thus, Dr. Frieden was lying to the public.

Of course, this is the same thing as stating that cigarette smoking may be no worse than vaping in terms of its effects on pulmonary function.

Now, thanks to Drs. Blum and Muhlberg, we find out that all the complaining by the anti-smoking groups about the "wild, wild West" of e-cigarette marketing in an unregulated environment is bogus, as these groups failed to insist on an amendment which would have regulated e-cigarettes as tobacco products. Instead, these groups - back in 2009 - were actually fighting to get e-cigarettes off the market entirely. Regulating them as tobacco products would have meant institutionalizing their entrance and penetration into the market. It would have risked having these safer products compete with much more hazardous products like regular tobacco cigarettes. And that, by the reasoning of Tobacco-Free Kids and Friends, would have been a disaster.

This story is particularly alarming, because it shows that for some anti-smoking groups, it really is no longer about health. It is solely about ideology. And apparently, the European Respiratory Society will cling to its precautionary ideology while smokers go to their graves.

Dr. Glantz is simply wrong. There is abundant evidence which demonstrates that while vaping does cause some degree of respiratory irritation (and probably triggers a bit of inflammation), it is far safer than smoking and has far less of an effect on lung function.

At the end of the day, while there are some positive aspects to these regulations, it is clear that science is not playing much of a role in the process. That does not bode well for the potential of electronic cigarettes to seriously challenge the combustible tobacco market, and thus to save hundreds of thousands of lives.
