Anecdotes are in fact data. Of course, what you do with that data and how you interpret it is affected by the nature of how the data were obtained. But anecdotes are data. Remember, the connection between smoking and lung cancer itself was first uncovered by a case series. Physicians started to note multiple cases of lung cancer - which was very rare at the time - all occurring in smokers. While these patients could be called "anecdotes," they were also people who provided very real and important data that led to the discovery that smoking causes lung cancer. That connection would not have been found had these "anecdotes" been dismissed.

Hopefully, Dr. Foulds and his group will next repeat the study using a sample of dual users (electronic cigarettes and regular cigarettes) to determine whether or not dual users experience a similar reduction in their overall level of smoking addiction.

Sadly, although the Surgeon General's report draws conclusions about the health impact of filtered cigarettes, it only cites one of these seven studies (the Luchtenborg study). And in citing that study, the report merely notes its finding that smoking increases colon cancer risk. It hides this study's finding that this increased colon cancer risk was only detected among smokers of non-filtered cigarettes!

The ACLU is also challenging the inclusion of electronic cigarettes in the regulations, as it seems absurd to ban the use of e-cigarettes in all parks, given the lack of any evidence that vaping in a park poses any substantial public health threat.
