What a great move it was of our Congress and the national anti-smoking groups to entrust the FDA with the protection of the safety of the cigarette market. We can rest assured knowing that the safety of our Marlboros, Camels, Newports, Parliaments, and Virginia Slims is not tainted by new and untested brands like Sutra Bidis Menthol. We can sleep more soundly at night, knowing that when our children try cigarettes, they'll try safe and approved brands like Marlboro, Camel, and Newport, rather than Sutra Bidis. And it will bring us all a measure of comfort knowing that when smokers die in the future, it will be due to the known hazards of products like the approved Newports, Kools, and Winstons, rather than the substantially non-equivalent Sutra Bidis Menthol Cone.
The finding of reduced exhaled nitric oxide is an indication that an exposure is causing some sort of inflammatory effect on cells lining the respiratory tract. It doesn't mean anything more or less than that. You can't take two exposures - each of which causes respiratory tract inflammation - and make the statement that the effects of both exposures are equal. Risk posed by an exposure depends on many other factors, including the degree of inflammation induced, the reversibility of the effect, the nature of the exposure, the chronicity of the exposure, etc.
The rest of the story is that this assertion by the FDA - that cigarette smoking may be no more hazardous than vaping - appears to be more politically-based than science-based. President Obama, in his inaugural address, called for a return of science to public policy. He asked that science be restored to its rightful place. However, the assertion that cigarette smoking is not known to be any more harmful than inhaling the aerosol produced by heating a solution of nicotine and propylene glycol is hardly something that can be viewed as science-based. Especially when e-cigarette vapor has been extensively characterized and shown to be far less toxic than cigarette smoke.
In fact, this is precisely what Trueba et al. demonstrated in a of changes in exhaled nitric oxide levels in 41 healthy college students.
