In contrast, it is the American Lung Association which is lying by implying to the public that Big Tobacco companies are enticing youth with candy-flavored electronic cigarettes such as bubble gum and cotton candy, that electronic cigarettes are a form of tobacco, and that tobacco companies are claiming that electronic cigarettes are safe.

Curiously, however, this knowledge doesn't stop Glantz from using these studies to draw a conclusion about the efficacy of e-cigarettes as smoking cessation aids in his review article. Moreover, his review article omits any mention of the fact that these 5 studies "did not measure whether people were using e-cigarettes as a smoking cessation aid" and that these studies "did not directly test the efficacy of e-cigarettes as smoking cessation aids."

These flaws are also noted by Dr. Robert West, director of tobacco research at University College London, who that: "the study was not able to assess whether or not for cancer patients who smoke using an e-cigarette to try and quit is beneficial "because the sample could consist of e-cigarette users who had already failed in a quit attempt, so all those who would have succeeded already would be ruled out"."

Based on this single study, Dr. Glantz concludes: "the FDA must be extremely careful about assuming that e-cigarettes uniformly pose less risk than conventional cigarettes."
