Suppose that there are 1000 e-cigarette users who enter the cancer center with a diagnosis of cancer. Of these, an amazing 900 were able to quit smoking. However, 100 were very resistant smokers and could not quit smoking, even with e-cigarettes. Note that it would be these 100 resistant smokers who would be enrolled in the study. The 900 ex-smokers who quit using e-cigarettes would not be eligible for the study, because they no longer smoke.

This is worth repeating: the nation's federal regulatory agency with jurisdiction over cigarettes is not sure that smoking - which kills more than 400,000 Americans each year - is any more dangerous than vaping, which involves no tobacco and no combustion and has not been shown to cause any harm. The FDA is not convinced that inhaling nicotine plus tens of thousands of chemicals and more than 60 known human carcinogens is any worse than inhaling nicotine plus propylene glycol and low levels of a few other chemicals.

Dr. Glantz is simply wrong. There is abundant evidence which demonstrates that while vaping does cause some degree of respiratory irritation (and probably triggers a bit of inflammation), it is far safer than smoking and has far less of an effect on lung function.

Instead, what we need are FDA regulations that will prevent the marketing of electronic cigarettes to youth. An outright ban on e-cigarette advertising is neither sensible nor constitutional.
