While most anti-smoking organizations continue to oppose electronic cigarettes, warning of the hypothetical risks of these products, new from the UK suggest that in real life, e-cigarettes are producing substantial public health benefits.

At the same time that the tobacco companies and the U.S. Department of Justice reached a consensus on the location of the tobacco industry corrective statements, the Rest of the Story has reached a consensus on the text and location of a set of corrective statements it is ordering that CDC and several anti-smoking groups and advocates make, in the wake of last year's revelation that they lied about the dangers of electronic cigarettes.

It is clear, then, that this study violated the principles of informed consent, as subjects did not provide informed consent prior to being enrolled in the research.

A recent from the UK involved a survey of 12,171 adults in February and March of this year. The survey found that 4.7% of ex-smokers were regularly using electronic cigarettes. Among these ex-smokers, 71% reported that they were using e-cigarettes to try to quit smoking and 48% reported that they were using e-cigarettes to try to keep off tobacco products. These data suggest that the overwhelming majority of ex-smokers using e-cigarettes are people who smoked and then quit smoking because of these products, rather than ex-smokers who returned to nicotine use via e-cigarettes.

The saddest part of the story is that while Councilman Constantinides is so concerned about youth "addiction" that he is willing to ban electronic cigarettes, he expressed no similar desire to ban the real ones. That's not public health leadership. It's political cowardice, and hypocrisy.

If the goal here were to simply protect children and infants from accidentally ingesting nicotine, then Senator Hannon could simply have introduced legislation to require childproof packaging and warning labels on these products. Instead, it appears that the goal is actually to protect the sale of cigarettes in New York by eliminating competition from a rapidly proliferating smoking cessation product that is projected to give tobacco cigarettes a run for their money.
