A recent from the UK involved a survey of 12,171 adults in February and March of this year. The survey found that 4.7% of ex-smokers were regularly using electronic cigarettes. Among these ex-smokers, 71% reported that they were using e-cigarettes to try to quit smoking and 48% reported that they were using e-cigarettes to try to keep off tobacco products. These data suggest that the overwhelming majority of ex-smokers using e-cigarettes are people who smoked and then quit smoking because of these products, rather than ex-smokers who returned to nicotine use via e-cigarettes.

Once again, the FDA is stating that smoking may not be any more hazardous than vaping.

This means that 99% of the electronic cigarette companies currently on the market are going to have to change the way they market their products. They are going to be forced to implicitly lie about their products by pretending that providing a safer alternative to smoking has nothing to do with why they are marketing these innovative devices.

Some knowledgeable analysts have predicted that if promoted, electronic cigarettes could actually replace nearly half of the combustible tobacco cigarette market. This would be the greatest public health achievement of my lifetime. Sadly, the American College of Chest Physicians and its partners do not want to see this happen. They would rather stick with the status quo, where smokers will continue to die in the millions each year, but at least they will not be taking any "unknown" risks.

This is yet another example of the anti-smoking groups bemoaning a situation for which they are actually responsible. For example, the anti-smoking groups have complained about the menthol loophole, but it was the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids and friends which insisted upon this loophole in the first place. The anti-smoking groups complained about the introduction of Marlboro No. 54, but again, it was the Campaign and its friends that made this introduction possible by exempting menthol as the only characterizing flavor allowed in cigarettes.

There is a part of this story that was not revealed at the hearing, and it is time to reveal it now at the Rest of the Story.
