Late last month, the University of Michigan released the results of the 2013 , a national study of youths in grades 8, 10, and 12. Despite the CDC's sirens about how e-cigarettes are leading to an increase in youth smoking, the data show that youth smoking rates reached a record low in 2013.

It shouldn't take a rocket toxicologist to figure out that electronic cigarettes - which contain no tobacco - have immense benefits over traditional tobacco products. It shouldn't take a rocket epidemiologist to figure out that eliminating almost all of the more than 10,000 chemicals and 60+ carcinogens in cigarettes is going to result in a safer product. And anyone who has read the numerous laboratory, toxicology, and clinical studies of electronic cigarettes and tobacco cigarettes should understand that vaping is much safer than smoking.

This research is good news for current users of electronic cigarette users who are using e-cigs to help reduce or quit using tobacco. It shows that medical professionals are at least having conversations about these products with their patients and, for many of the doctors involved, they believe that e-cigarettes are less harmful than smoking tobacco.
