2. It Degrades the Research Integrity of Tobacco Control

It shouldn't take a rocket toxicologist to figure out that electronic cigarettes - which contain no tobacco - have immense benefits over traditional tobacco products. It shouldn't take a rocket epidemiologist to figure out that eliminating almost all of the more than 10,000 chemicals and 60+ carcinogens in cigarettes is going to result in a safer product. And anyone who has read the numerous laboratory, toxicology, and clinical studies of electronic cigarettes and tobacco cigarettes should understand that vaping is much safer than smoking.

The most telling point is Dr. Glantz's opposition to legislation that classifies electronic cigarettes as being separate from tobacco products. The electronic cigarette associations have been lobbying local and state governments not to classify e-cigarettes as tobacco products. This makes perfect sense because they are not tobacco products. They contain no tobacco. They are orders of magnitude safer than cigarettes and should not be treated in the same category for regulatory purposes.

Ironically, in the long run, hiding the influence of Big Pharma on smoking cessation policy does not advance the cessation field, but brings it to a grinding halt. The public, and tobacco control practitioners themselves, need to understand the deeply ingrained roots of Big Pharma within the tobacco control movement, especially in the smoking cessation field. Failure to do so will lead to blind following of an industry-based agenda. This is precisely what has happened in tobacco control.
