According to CDC Director Dr. Thomas Frieden, the thousands of smokers who have quit smoking via electronic cigarettes are nothing but anecdotes. As Dr. Frieden told the Los Angeles Times in , referring to smokers who have quit using e-cigarettes: "the plural of anecdote is not data."

"In the lecture, the Kandels review Denise Kandel’s earlier work on the gateway hypothesis and on the role of nicotine as a gateway drug, reported in a Science paper in 1975. They also review subsequent studies in which they tested the gateway hypothesis experimentally in a mouse model. If this is the kind of "scientific" reasoning that is going to guide the nation's decisions on how to handle tobacco products which are killing hundreds of thousands of Americans each year, then we may actually be better off reverting back to the "wild, wild west" that Stan Glantz keeps talking about. At least in that wild west, consumers are able to make reasonable judgments about the relative safety of different products. In the FDA-regulated "east," consumers are going to be kept hidden from even the most basic truths: that electronic cigarettes do not contain tobacco and that they are much safer than the real thing.

If the policy were based on health principles, then it would certainly include other behaviors, such as those related to obesity, which have large health care costs and which set a "bad example." It would certainly include alcohol use as well.
