Sadly, there is more to the story of Dr. Luther Terry's reign as Surgeon General and more to the legacy of his having served this critical role as leader of the Public Health Service.

Importantly, the ERS did not qualify its statement. It did not state that it is opposed to the use of e-cigarettes by smokers who may be able to quit without them. It did not state that it is opposed to the use of e-cigarettes except among smokers who cannot quit without them. It simply stated its blanket opposition to any and all use of electronic cigarettes by smokers.

The failure of the Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act does call for criticism. But that criticism should not be leveled at the colors Gold, Silver, and Blue. The criticism should be directed at the anti-smoking groups and politicians who sold out the health of the public for political gain.
