The rest of the story is that this assertion by the FDA - that cigarette smoking may be no more hazardous than vaping - appears to be more politically-based than science-based. President Obama, in his inaugural address, called for a return of science to public policy. He asked that science be restored to its rightful place. However, the assertion that cigarette smoking is not known to be any more harmful than inhaling the aerosol produced by heating a solution of nicotine and propylene glycol is hardly something that can be viewed as science-based. Especially when e-cigarette vapor has been extensively characterized and shown to be far less toxic than cigarette smoke.

Not everyone is informed as we are about what exactly an electronic cigarette is. Cigarettes have been demonized for decades; the very fact that it’s called an electronic cigarette and produces a opaque vapor during exhale has many misinformed individuals terrified.

Thus, the authors readily acknowledge that it is impossible from this study to determine whether or not e-cigarettes lead to smoking or whether smoking leads to e-cigarette experimentation.

There is no justification for drawing this sweeping conclusion based solely on studies of mouse brains, without a shred of clinical or epidemiologic evidence that suggests e-cigarettes serve as a gateway to smoking or illicit drug addiction. And I think it is inappropriate to engage in this kind of scaremongering.
