According to a NJTV News : "More towns are banning smoking at the beach in New Jersey. Global Advisors on Smokefree Policy (GASP) Executive Director Karen Blumenfeld told NJTV News Managing Editor Mike Schneider that GASP really wants a 100 percent smoke-free environment in public places."

Personally, I cannot condone the idea of establishing an award in Dr. Terry's name, and I would hope that the American Cancer Society would rename its award so as not to commemorate the legacy of a physician who - during his tenure as a government leader - directed one of the worst, most unethical, and most racist medical and public health atrocities of our time.

In fact, the bulk of the evidence suggests that the introduction of the cigarette filter, while obviously not making cigarettes substantially safer, did result in small but measurable declines in cancer risk. These declines occurred due to a tremendous reduction in tar yield, from levels as high as 40-50 mg down to less than 20 mg. The evidence suggests that further declines - to levels below this massive initial drop - were not associated with further declines in cancer risk.

He has also received grant support for research and writing from GSK and/or Pfizer on at least five occasions. In 2010, he co-authored a study, funded by Pfizer, on the use of its drug, Chantix, for smoking cessation."

As electronic cigarettes become more mainstream, physicians will be called on more and more to discuss the safety and effectiveness of these types of devices/products. It is extremely crucial that the FDA take in all the evidence on electronic cigarettes and deliver a clear and substantial review for not only physicians, but the general public as well in regards to them being a possible safer tobacco substitute. Most physicians seem to a similar thought process pertaining to the overall recommendations of using an e-cig as a tobacco eliminating solution – primarily giving their patients as much info as possible – good and bad – and letting them decide on their own.
