Furthermore, it is well known that electronic cigarette users do not inhale more deeply than smokers. While smoke does enter the distal airways - which is why adenocarcinoma rates have increased so dramatically - vaping involves aerosol inhalation and the aerosol is mostly absorbed in the upper, not the lower airways. As with a nicotine inhaler, most of the nicotine absorption occurs in the upper airways.

It is difficult enough for youth to initiate cigarette smoking because of the harsh taste of the smoke. This is precisely why menthol cigarettes are so popular among youth. Menthol acts as an anaesthetic which makes it easier for a new smoker to tolerate the harsh taste. For smokeless tobacco products, adding flavorings appears to make these products more appealing to youth, probably for this very reason.

The first of these two debates is over whether or not to legalize the sales of electronic cigarettes in county jails, where the goal of this law requested by North Carolinas’ Sheriffs’ Association, would be to nullify a law passed earlier this year banning county inmates from possessing any and all electronic cigarettes and/or vapor related products. This new measure which has been quietly snuck into house bill 1133 specifically gives only county jails and “not” state prisons the authority to sell e-cigarettes and other smoking “cessation” items like nicotine patches or lozenges, which has the potential of raising millions in desperately needed revenue for the ever increasing costs of running, improving and maintaining county jail operations.

In other words, 92% of the e-cigarette users in the study were not trying to quit. We know for a fact that 92% of the e-cigarette users were not making a quit attempt. And yet the study authors interpret the data as if these smokers were trying to quit using e-cigarettes, but failed!
