The rest of the story is that the 2014 Surgeon General's report is violating the very ethical principles that it attacks the tobacco company for violating in the past. While there has been substantial progress in the past 50 years in the area of disclosure of conflicts of interest, somehow that progress has evaded the producers of the Surgeon General's report itself.

Today, I reflect on what this story demonstrates about the scientific bias that is apparent in the anti-smoking movement, particularly among researchers like Dr. Glantz, who has repeatedly misinterpreted scientific studies in order to skewer electronic cigarettes.

The Northampton Board of Health may not have created public health regulations that have any consistency or science base. However, they have created an excellent entry for the 2014 Hypocrisy of the Year Award.

While Dr. Etzel seems to be quite concerned about youth use of e-cigarettes, she fails to display a similar level of concern about youth using tobacco cigarettes. In fact, while she calls for a ban on electronic cigarette advertising to protect youths from possible nicotine addiction, she makes no similar call for a ban on tobacco advertising, which we know leads many youths to definite nicotine addiction.
