In fact, there is no evidence for any of the three parts ofSenator Blumenthal’s statement. There is no scientific evidence thate-cigarettes addict children to nicotine. There is no evidence thate-cigarettes lure children into a lifetime of smoking addiction. And there isno evidence that e-cigarettes cost our society billions of dollars.

One thing both opponents and proponents of e-cigarettes agree on is the need for more research. As electronic devices become more prevalent and users have prolonged exposure to vapor cigarettes scientists and health organizations can study the effects and present more clear positions on e-cigarette use. For now, e-cigs are quite obviously a safer method for nicotine delivery than the inhalation of smoke.

In other words, the blatant flaw in this study is that it enrolled smokers who had already made quit attempts using e-cigarettes in the past. By definition, this resulted in a sample of smokers who were more resistant to quitting. One would expect to find lower quitting rates among this population of e-cigarette users.

This bill would serve to protect the profits of Big Tobacco. Most troublesome is the fact that it would protect the sale of the most toxic market segment - combustible cigarettes - at the expense of a smoking cessation product that has been shown to be much safer to users.
